DRAMATIC READING: UNVEILING SUBTEXTUAL MEANINGS AND MAKING SENSE OF THE LIFE OF THE TEXTS

Teaching Literature is not an easy task. Current trends in literature encourage students and teachers to be highly interested in exploring and experiencing different strategies and up-dated techniques in this field. The problem of teaching English and its literature in the academic context leads us to constantly propose new challenges in order not only to fulfill the academic requirements, but also to stimulate in the students the sensations of pleasure as well as the gaining of knowledge in the reading of literary texts, particularly in our country where reading is definitely overpasses by other means of communication.

Therefore the Venezuelan teachers of English as foreign language must face and overcome the weakness in reading and writing most of our students unfortunately bring into the classroom. Based on this, the students of the course of Introduction to Literature (English Program) at IPM-UPEL decided to actively take part in the IV International Students Meeting on Literature and Culture of the English Speaking World and designed a public activity to expose their improvements in the meaningful reading of dramatic texts written by the most famous playwrights so far.

The activity consisted of the reading of some of the selected scenes ever written in theater and of making us get involved again in unforgettable moments as that when the brutal and drunk Stanley Kowalski hit his sweet and pregnant wife Stella or when the fragile and innocent Laura Wingfield is kissed for the first time by Jim O’Connor, “that emissary of the ordinary world”. The students try hard to put into practice all the theoretical knowledge providing the appropriate intonation, diction, and rhythm for the different speech acts.

The experience had a communicative-functional basis from which they got a better understanding of Literature and will be taken as a reference in our future classes.
Fortunately the goal was achieved successfully!
